SURFACE PHENOMENA GROUP

The interest of our group in surfactants began in the 1970’s with the investigation of the resistance of the interface between two liquids to momentum and mass transfer.  The attention of the group, working at the time on unit operations and transport phenomena of chemical engineering, were drawn to the two dimensional world and molecular interactions.  A joint project with PETKİM A.Ş. on the production of surface active agents by the sulfonation of side products obtained during the production of dodecyl benzene and the evaluation of their performance, initiated further research on surface active agents.

Research Activities:  Determination of the physical properties, surface and interfacial properties of surface active agents in aqueous and non-aqueous solutions.  Modification of clay surfaces and their surface related properties by adsorption of surface active agents.  Performance of micelles as nano-reactors.

Formulation Studies:  Assessment of the performance of industrial products containing surface active agents alone or with other additives and their formulation to create a desired effect.

Educational Activities for the Surface Phenomena:  There is a package program of elective courses on the physical properties and the application areas of surface active agents.  Work shops and in-job training courses can be arranged on the same subjects.
